Closehouse Observatory, Newcastle

History
The observatory’s primary function was to support the university’s physics and astronomy departments, providing students with hands-on experience in observational astronomy. It was equipped with a 24-inch reflector telescope, which was a significant instrument at the time, enabling detailed studies of celestial objects such as planets, stars, and galaxies.

In its early years, Close House Observatory was used for undergraduate teaching, postgraduate research, and public outreach. It contributed to observational studies in stellar astronomy and photometry (the measurement of light from celestial objects). Additionally, it served as a key site for astronomy education, hosting demonstrations and events for students and local amateur astronomers.

However, as light pollution from Newcastle and surrounding areas increased, the quality of observations declined. By the late 1990s, advances in remote and space-based telescopes had reduced the need for small, ground-based observatories.
