History
Kelenföld Power Station, located in Budapest, Hungary, is an iconic example of early 20th-century industrial architecture. Constructed between 1912 and 1914, it was designed by Hungarian architect Kálmán Reichl in a striking Art Deco and Art Nouveau style. Initially, Kelenföld was a coal-powered plant and one of the most advanced facilities in Europe, becoming essential to Budapest’s growing energy needs and helping electrify the city’s transportation network.
Over the years, the station adapted to technological advancements, transitioning to oil and later to natural gas. By the mid-20th century, it became a major energy supplier, providing electricity and later heat to Budapest’s urban areas.
